The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has approved the development plan for the 1.5 MtCO2/year Northern Lights CO2 transport and storage project, developed by a consortium of Equinor, Shell and Total, and has signed the final state support agreements with the companies.

The NOK6.9bn (€630m) project is developed as part of the Norwegian CCS project "Langskip", approved by the Norwegian parliament in January 2021. It will capture CO2 from industrial sources, transport it by ships and inject it to be permanently stored 2,600 metres below the seabed. The CO2 receiving terminal will be located in ?ygarden in Western Norway. The first phase is scheduled to be commissioned in 2024 and the project could be expanded at a later stage.
