BP announces 1GW blue hydrogen project
On 18 March British oil major BP announced plans for a 1GW blue hydrogen facility at Teesside industrial cluster by 2030.
The project, called H2Teesside, would account for 20% of the UK government’s ambition to have 5GW of low-carbon hydrogen production online by the end of this decade. The facility would use natural gas alongside carbon capture and storage to generate blue hydrogen.
The project will be built in phases following final investment decision, which is due to be taken in 2024. Thereafter, 500MW of capacity could be online by 2027 or earlier, with the remaining capacity potentially online by 2030.
Carbon capture rates from the proposed H2Teesside plant are as high as 98%.
BP doesn’t state whether the technology will be autothermal reforming (ATR) or steam methane reforming (SMR).
ATR is the technology of choice for both the Acorn project in Scotland and the HyNet project around the greater Manchester region.
According to BP, the hydrogen from the H2Teesside project will be used within the industrial region, but could also be distributed to residential areas with time.
In line with this, BP has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Venator to supply hydrogen to its flagship titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigments and performance additives.
A further MoU was signed with Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England to provide decarbonised gas supply to industrial and residential customers.
H2Teesside would be integrated with the region’s Net Zero Teesside (BZT) and Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) carbon capture use and storage (CCUS) projects, both of which are led by BP as operator.
This announcement follows the UK Government’s Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy released on 17 March, which will provide £171m in funding to reduce the emissions produced by several industrial clusters, including Teesside.
