Iraq signed 4 major energy deals with French Total

Iraq's Ministry of Oil signed an agreement with France’s Total for 4 major associated gas & solar power sprojects in the country: Plants to collect and refine associated natural gas at the fields of Artawi, West Qurna 2, Majnoon, Toba and Luhais. This will include a Central Gas Complex at Artawi

    Development of the Artawi field

The integrated seawater project, which the ministry has been trying to implement for more than 10 years

    A 1,000MW solar energy plant

The size of the deal was not disclosed, but oil minister, Iraqi Minister of Oil Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar said that Total will invest more than $7 billion into the country.

While no specific details regarding the projects have been forthcoming, Iraq is currently drawing up plans to tender for around 700MW of solar capacity, an auction which was announced last month.

At the time Iraq’s oil ministry confirmed it was consulting with Total as well as undisclosed Norwegian companies regarding the tenders.

Iraq has an ambition to have an installed solar generation capacity of 10GW by 2030 in order to reduce its carbon footprint and its reliance on fossil fuel-based power generators in the country. The country is also trying to lower its dependence on Iranian gas and electricity imports as it comes under increasing US pressure.

Total is active in Iraq for nearly a century, since the 1920s in oil and gas exploration and production.

A project in Iraq would mark another frontier for the company’s fast growing renewable energy business, which has made solar and offshore wind its 2 main focuses.
